Mass versus weight

In everyday use, "mass" usually has the same meaning as "weight"; however, in physics, those words represent two different concepts:

  1. Mass - refers to an elemental property of an object. It's the amount of "matter" in an object. We usually measure it in pounds or kilograms.

  2. Weight - refers to the force acting on the object due to gravity. It measures an object's resistance to deviation from its natural course of free fall (which is influenced by gravity). It is usually measured in pounds-force or Newtons.

For example, 1 kilogram of chocolate has a weight of about 9.8 newtons on the surface of the Earth. Its weight will be smaller on Mars (as the gravity is weaker), but greater on Saturn. The mass, however, will always be the same.

How to measure mass and weight?

1. Mass can be measured using a balancing scale (where we compare the object to another object with known mass) or using equations, e.g.:

F = m * a

where,

F - force, expressed in newtons;

m - mass, which we can express in, e.g., kilograms; and

a - acceleration (9.81 m/s2 is the commonly used approximation for Earth).

2. Weight can be directly measured using a:

  • Weighing scale (spring, hydraulic or pneumatic) - measures local weight, that is the local force of gravity on the object; and

  • Balancing scale - we can compare the weight of an unknown object to the weight of a reference object (e.g., balance weights).

Units of mass

The standard International System of Units (SI) unit of mass is the kilogram (kg). However, remember that the SI prefixes for different mass using the unit gram as their base, not the kilogram. We listed some examples below:

  • Microgram (1 µg = 0.000001 g);
  • Milligram (1 mg = 0.001 g);
  • Gram (1 g);
  • Decagram (1 dag = 10 g);
  • Kilogram (1 kg = 1000 g); and
  • Megagram/tonne (1 t = 1000 kg or 106 g).

The imperial units of mass are used in some countries that were part of the British Empire, including United Kingdom itself and Canada. Here, the fundamental unit is pound (lb), and all other units are defined as fractions or multiples of it. Some of the units include:

  • Grain (1 gr = 1/7000 lb);
  • Ounce (1 oz = 1/16 lb);
  • Pound (1 lb);
  • Stone (1 stone = 14 lbs); and
  • Ton (1 ton = 2240 lbs).

U.S. units are similar to the imperial system; however, there are some differences, e.g., there is no "stone" and a ton equals 2000 lbs.

It's all quite complicated, isn't it? Fortunately, we have all sorts of conversion tools, including this grams to ounces calculator! Read the paragraph below to find out how to convert grams to oz and oz to grams 🙃
